Proposal for Ideas

Proposal for Ideas

Here is a brief video explaining what I am aspiring to achieve with my music video and the general ideas and direction that I hope to take my video in. In addition, I explained what significance scenes are going to have in my video and what purpose these shots serve in my video in order to adhere to the grand narrative, house themes and the generic conventions of the genre. The synoptic summary was then uploaded to YouTube and made accessible for others who gave me feedback so that I knew which ideas seemed feasible and if they would be interesting to watch.

Analysis of Magazine Adverts

Analysis of Magazine Adverts

Here is a Prezi that I have created in order to display a variety of different magazine adverts for artists all within the same genre as my selected artist: indie. I have analysed each one by taking into account what techniques have been adopted in order to make the advert successful but also what makes them effective to me, and what I could use in the creation of my magazine advert. Moreover, I have looked into the other conventional aspects that I can see are present withing all of the adverts and what generic conventions aspects are used within the industry in order to effectively promote and sell an album. I believe this task has been very useful as it has allowed me to pinpoint what I need to do in order to make my magazine advert successful, and it has also inspired me to achieve a successful advert.

Alterations Made Along The Way

Alterations Made Along the Way

As I am now well into the construction of my project, I have noticed that there are some ideas that are either not viable, or not as effective as other scenes are and therefore need changing. As a result of this, I have decided to take action and make a few slight changes to my video that I believe to be very beneficial. You can see below, that I have chosen 5 key shots to change throughout my video and I am of the opinion that this will benefit the overall production greatly and make for a more effective video.

Actor Release Forms

 Actor Release Forms

Below are two actor release forms that I got both of the protagonists in my video to sign to make sure that they knew exactly what they were doing, and what would be expected of them. However, I believe that this also highlighted to the actors that this project is very serious as although this is ultimately a signed piece of paper; it gives the entire project a sense of seriousness and professionalism.

Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment

Here I have created a risk assessment table in order to display all of the possible problems that I may face during the production process of my music video. I have considered important aspects such as personal injury, health and safety, damage to the equipment and finally the factors that may halt the overall production. Additionally, I have looked at what specific risks may occur and how I can minimise them. I think that by creating this risk assessment I have benefited greatly, and I am now fully aware of the possible risks that I could encounter and the actions I can take as a precaution to prevent them.

Storyboards

Storyboards for my Video

Story-boarding the entirety of my music was an essential task in the planning of my production due to the fact that it gave a clear outline for the whole of my video and allowed me to spearhead towards the final task thus making it easier when it came to actually shooting my video. The storyboards allowed me to narrow down and fine tune my ideas as well as giving me the clear incentives as to what had to be completed, and this is why I believe that this was such an essential task in the planning stages of my production as it allowed me fine tune my ideas. Ultimately, I am now happy with the sequence of my video and the selection of shots that I have chosen and it is now down to me to make sure that my thoughts turn to motion and I replicate these ideas with the shots that I capture through my shoots.

Magazine Advert Draft

For the next feature of my project I have to create an magazine advert for the artist who's music video I am creating. In order to make this successful I believe that it is of vital importance that I make sure that my magazine advert has features that will make it attractive to my desired target audience, but also that it adheres to the generic themes and conventions of all the other pieces of advertising that I have created already, in an attempt to build an image around the artist.
The first design that I came up with when drafting the magazine advert was to have my character with his back to the camera in a mid-shot whilst standing over a bridge. I think that it is acceptable to have my main character with his back to the camera as his dress code should be instantly recognisable from his star image, and therefore it is not vital for his face to be seen. Alternatively, it can act as an enigma code for people who have not heard of or seen the artist before, and this will then lead to them wanting to research into the mysterious character and solve any questions that they may have. This design would be feasible as a result of the fact that this is also going to be a scene in my music video; alternatively this could also be successful as fans will also recognise this factor.
Next, I drafted a design where the main character would again have his back to camera to emit the same effects upon the audience as I described previously, however this time around the artist would be sat on a bench in a park with an artistic looking surrounding. I strongly believe that this setting would be more effective as the last idea that I planned due to the fact that the woods, and scenic views are commonly related to the indie genre and this is the category that my music video falls into. Furthermore, there is a lot of views and techniques that you can play with in this kind of setting- shallow focus photos for example- and this will then make my design stand out from any others.
My third design relies heavily upon the star image of the artist in order to make the advert successful as the design includes nothing but an close up of his face with a pure black backdrop. This then reveals to the audience how the character has a significant level of stardom as his face alone can sell his product, however this also comes at a risk because if the artist does not have a large enough fanbase; the entire plan could backfire. I feel as though this effect can look very eye-catching, although it is only effective with high profile celebrities and my artist is not in this category.
To conclude, my final idea would be to have my main character to be stood on a high-street with his two characters vaguely in the distance. This again would be a clip from my music video and would thus be easy to create. However, this also has drawbacks from the effectiveness of the visuals and this is why I believe that another choice would be more suitable as the advert ultimately needs to be eye-catching, and this would be hard to make very focal.

Filming and Editing Schedule

Filming and Editing Schedule

Here is a filming and editing schedule that I have constructed in order to fine tune my time management and allow myself to spearhead into the completed product in quicker time due to the fact that I will know what I have to do by which specific date. Furthermore, I believe it to be essential for myself to allow some contingency time so that I can make time for re-shoots and additional editing if necessary but still meet the overall deadline of the project.

Draft Video

I drafted my ideas in front of a camera so that I could demonstrate the sort of ideas in which I am looking to create throughout my video. In some parts of this video, you are also able to see some of the clips from my test shoots that I have already taken part in. However, over the oncoming month I plan to complete the majority of shooting which will then leave me with enough time for editing the video and completing the evaluation tasks, but also contingency time for correcting anything that I think I could do better.

Digipak Drafting

Drafting For My Digipak

Before the creation of my digipak I decided to draw out four possible drafted ideas roughly so that I could then spearhead my ideas into a narrower idea and then create a greater final piece overall. I believe that this was an effective method of planning as I now have a better idea that is also much clearer in my head and this will then lead to me being time efficient but also successful in creating a professional piece of work.

My first design is of a clock that will have the hands spinning around very quickly inside of it with the title of the album also in the centre of the clock. Although in this draft the effectiveness is not clear due to myself not being very artistic, the clock would be an old Victorian clock and the hands would be over-elaborate in order to appeal to the interests of the indie genre which prefer retro and vintage products. Furthermore, the clock theme adheres to the title of the album and this could therefore imply why the this draft could be relevant to being my selected choice for my final piece as it clearly represents what the album is all about.

The second draft would be of a built up area as the sun is setting and the street lights are on. I believe that this would reflect the connection between modern society and the beauty of nature and would therefore be a great representative of the artist that I am using as they are a very powerful soul singer who sings over electronic beats, and this would then be reflected in the album art. Furthermore, I feel as though the lights and bright orange colour of the sky as the sun sets leaves a lot of room for editing and this could then convert a mediocre image into a fantastic piece of art.

Next, I designed a long shot of a man sat on a bench admiring the very scenic autumn view around him. The man is also wearing a trench coat and a baker’s cap of which both pieces of clothing are both strongly related to being worn by my artist Alex Clare, and I think that this would then entice the audience into thinking that it is him sat on the bench. This enigma code will intrigue the audience and I believe that this will help them into gaining interest into the digipak and wanting to look into it in more detail. As a result of this, I strongly feel as though this would be a successful digipak and without it being too hard to create, I would seriously consider using this idea.

Finally, I decided to have a draft which placed the focal point of the album art as being the name of the artist as they will have the greatest star image which will then lure in the audience simply because of their name and what connotations of success and fond memories that have of it. I placed the artist name in the largest font in the centre of the digipak with the album title in smaller font underneath, meanwhile all of these will be on top of a scenic view with a train passing through. Yet again, this combines the modern culture with archaic qualities, and as I expressed earlier this would express the ideas and theme of the artist well. I think this therefore places this draft as a major contender for the final product.

Raw Footage of Locations

Raw Footage of Locations

I have taken a brief video of where the possible shooting of my video could take place. This task was very useful as it clearly showed me if there would be any lighting issues with where I would want to film due to the fact that all of my shooting will take place at night and there therefore needs to be a substantial amount of lighting as this is a key issue for the shooting of a video. Alternatively, I used unsteady camera work to see if the lights would blur or cause any sort of flair on the camera playback. Although the camera work will be nowhere near as unsteady as I have used in this test, it is always best to try with the most extreme circumstances so that there will be no margin for errors if the camera work is slightly unsteady, and then the clip can remain useful.

Editing Software

Editing Software

Throughout the duration of the project I will be using various software in order to make sure that my items remain as successful and professional as possible. The software that I am going to be using most frequently are Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Premiere CS3. These programs will be used both in the creation of my digipak and magazine advert, but also the editing of my video. As a result of this, these two programs will be fundamental in the overall production of my project as if they are used correctly, they will allow me to achieve the highest grade possible and leave me with a high quality and professional product. However, I may also have to use Adobe After Effects so that I can edit clips from my video and add in effects if they are needed. This will be a new product for me to use, and this therefore may be a hindrance to the project as a whole.

Firstly, I will be using Photoshop and a variety of its tools that it offers not only to to edit the images that I have taken to place on my digipak and magazine advert, but also to arrange the overall layout of these tasks and make them as presentable and successful as possible. Photoshop will allow me to cut images and blend them together if needed, but will also allow me to use visual effects so that my pieces will be graphically pleasing and interesting to the audience. I believe that effects like filters, lens flares and editing the hue and saturation of images will allow viewers to see that I have skills in using Photoshop but the most important factor of doing this will mainly be that it will be for their pleasure.

Next, I will be using Adobe Premiere for the majority of my time on this task as I will be using it for editing my music video, which in full will take up the most of my time. I have recent knowledge on how to use the software as I have used it in other tasks to create videos and presentations. I must make sure that I place all of my clips onto a timeline and remove their audio that is with them by unlinking the clips. After this, I will import my song for the video and edit the clips around the song so that it flows and there is a smooth, video that is easy to watch video for my intended audience.

Finally, I may have to use Adobe After Effects in the creation of my video if I would like to place special effects into my video or even for something as simple as brightening or darkening a clip. I believe that this will be a challenge as I have never used this software before and will therefore need to be taught how to produce certain effects, therefore this is then a risk as they may not be very successful due to the fact that I have never done this before. However, throughout my video there will be very few chances for special effects to be used as it is heavily based around a narrative.

Raw images of Locations

Raw Images of Locations

Here are a few images of the location where the most influential parts, but also where the majority of the video will be shot. I believe that this is an ideal location for me to shoot my scenes in due to the fact that there is sufficient lighting, but it is also still dark enough to adhere to the theme of the video. Ultimately, it is still a high-street which was required for my scenes, but it is not that busy which makes it ideal as it means that other people will not ruin my scenes.

Costume Planning

Costume Planning

Above are the final ideas that I have for my two protagonists in my music video and how they are going to be dressed. I believe that overall this has given me great assistance in the overall creation of my task due to the fact that I have now been able to forward my ideas to the actors, and they too have been able to prepare themselves for the project. Therefore, the task has not only benefited me, but also the people around me and now everyone is more ready than they once were.

Props List

Props List

This word document -which I posted onto Scribd so that I could share on my blog with ease- is a list that I compiled of possible props that I will use throughout the creation of my project. It can clearly be denoted from the props that I am creating a party scene due to the fact that I have DJ decks, disco lights and beer bottles involved, of which all of these have strong connotations to a party fueled lifestyle. In addition, I believe that the most important prop on the list is the clock, as this plays a fundamental role in my video that will become clearer once the audience see my video.

Permission

Permission

I asked for permission to use the song from artist so that I could not be infringing on copyrights that are standing. I believe that this also reflects the professionalism of the task as a whole and how seriously I am taking the project as I am trying to consider every possible aspect that could have an impact on my video. Furthermore, the screenshot was taken from the email that I sent to Alex Clare's management and I am now awaiting their reply so that I can use their video without an act of plagiarism taking place.

Moodboard.

I created a moodboard of common items and conventions for the genre of the video which I am creating: indie. Due to the fact that I am creating a video in the indie genre, I have included images of artists from within that genre but also pictures of generic items and styles which are commonly connotated with the genre. Overall, I feel as though this task has brought ideas and items which are common to the genre further to my attention, and this has ultimately resulted in myself knowing what I can include in order to converge with my audience and instantly strike up a strong relationship with them as a result of them being around items like this in their every day life and them taking great interest into the genre.

Song Lyric Analysis.

I analysed the lyrics of the song which I am going to use when creating my music video, and I did this by finding the lyrics online and putting them into a word document. Once I had done this, I took each line and deconstructed its meaning and relevance towards the title of the song. In addition, I scrutinised the words that had been used and took away the semantical meaning of them which may not be clear when the song is being sung. I believe that this task was very useful in the planning stage because it has given me a much greater understanding of the song, and also the feelings and emotions of the performer. As a result of this, I will now be able to create a more accurate video with a distinctive meaning. Finally, this task has given me the ability to adhere to Goodwin's theory of music videos, and will let me match the visuals to the song.

Initial Planning Ideas

My Initial Planning Ideas

My initial plan ideas was more of a brainstorm and draft of all of my first rough ideas, and these included: locations, props and actors, time management, equipment and ultimately my initial plot line. I feel as though this task is very useful and will help my overall running of the task as it has given me a brief outline of what I want to happen, and how I am going to make it happen. Furthermore, it lets me see if my ideas are feasible and what will need to be changed for the time schedule to be met, or just simply what is possible. Finally, I believe that the task has taught me the importance of planning before jumping into the production of the task, as I am still a long way from being ready to shoot my video, and this task highlighted this fact.
