Analysis of Previous Student Work

Analysis of Previous Student Work

Target Audience

For the target audience task I interviewed people who are most likely to be in my target audience for my desired artist, and asked them what they thought the generic and key conventions of a music video in this genre are to be. I feel as though this has made me aware of how to appeal to my audiences needs and wants and ultimately how to make my video feel like a video from that genre, but also to remain successful in its purpose.

Research into Possible Equipment Choices

Research into Possible Equipment Choices

Tracking an Artist Through Their Career.

Tracking an Artist Through Their Career.

I looked at David Guetta's career as he has grown to become one of the biggest house and electronic Dj's and producers in the world, and as my artist is heavily influenced by these genres; it would only be relevant to look at one of the most successful artists.

Analysis of Alex Clare in Magazines

Analysis of Alex Clare in Magazines

I looked at my artist in magazines and how he is represented to his fans and also other mass market audiences. This has given me an insight into my artist about how they present themselves to audiences and ultimately I've gathered a greater understanding of how my artist acts and behaves.

Influences of music style

Influences of Music Style

I looked at the influences of my music style on culture, but also how my artist may well have been influenced by other factors of society and other artists too. I believe that this has taught me a vital lesson for when I create my music video, as it has clearly highlighted the areas and issues which are commonly connotated with the indie genre as a whole.

What are digipaks?

What are Digipaks?

Above is a Voki which I created as an alternative style of post. This task was to describe what a digipak is and what are conventionally seen inside them.

Music Channels.

Music Channels

The investigation into music channels was a task where I simply looked into the most recognised, and the channels which owned the majority of the market share. As a result of this, I looked at MTV, VIVA, 4Music and The Box. However, all of which have a different genre and purpose. Therefore, I believe that this task has taught me which channel my video would be on once I had produced it.

Research into Relevant Music Genre.

Research into Relevant Music Genre

Above is the research into the music genre that my music video is going to be a part of. I believe that this was a worthwhile task in the overall task as it has given me an even clearer and greater understanding of the genre as a whole, and the key clear signifiers that I will have to use in my video so that the audience can relate to it.

Music Video Theory.

Music Video Theory.

I looked at the theories involved in the analysis of music videos and in particular the ideas of Andrew Goodwin. Looking into the theories of Andrew Goodwin was not only an interesting task, but it also reflected what needs to be included into my music video and how I am going to make my video adhere to the general conventions of every music video. For example, his theory on the five conventions that the audience look out for in music videos has highlighted to me what conventions my music video will include and therefore what makes my video conform to the norms. From this, I have taken away what will be included in my video and how this will be received by the audience, and ultimately how to create a successful video.

Evidence of Music Videos that I admire or I'm Influenced By.

Evidence of Music Videos that I admire or I'm Influenced By.
I took extracts from music videos which have a similar style to the one which I am attempting to create and then said what I liked about them, why and if I think I could recreate these successful techniques. Moreover, I looked at iconic scenes from these music videos which I could also place into my music video and that the audience would then relate to due to the fact that they are also interested in the genre and will more than likely have seen these videos. Finally, I yet again believe that this video has helped with my understanding of what makes a music video successful and has furthermore assisted me in identifying what I can do without too much professional equipment or skills and still make an interesting, easily viewable but ultimately successful video.

Analysis of a Music Video Director

My research into a music video director was key to the research stage of my task as it has given me ideas of what makes a music video good to view, and which conventions and techniques I can incorporate into my video in order to make my video successful and reflect other directors and videos. I looked into the director Jonas Akerlund and what he has done in his career, and how that has made him a well acclaimed music video director. I feel as though this knowledge has helped me build up an idea of what generic conventions help to make a video successful and what leads to a video being well acclaimed. From this, I can then take away what needs to be in my video and what ideas assist a video in being memorable.

Research into Artist

My research into my artist developed my knowledge of them and made me feel as though I knew their life story and them personally. I feel that this is an essential task to complete because when I am creating a music video from this desired artist, I will be able to include features from them and aspects of their appearance. Alternatively, it built my knowledge about them as a person and not just and artist and I believe that this again adheres to the objective of beginning to understand the artist completely.

The History of Music Videos

I belive that the research into music videos was a vital task for my understanding of music videos in general as it gives me the knowledge of knowing which videos were momentous in their creation, and how the music has changed and developed over time. I looked at the impact of MTV and YouTube on music videos and how the proliferation of technology has not only lead to music videos looking visually better, but also how there are a lot more videos being made in todays world due to the fact that recording devices are even easier to obtain. Finally, I then passed my judgement on what the future holds for music videos and I feel as though I was able to make this prediction after building my knowledge on the topic of music videos as a whole.

Research into Existing Music Labels

Research Into Existing Music Labels

Above is my research into existing labels which I conducted in order to increase my knowledge on the music industry, how it runs and who are the major firms inside it. In this case, I looked at the three largest companies and what percentage of the market they owned. Furthermore, I took interest in what labels these companies owned and how diverse they were. However, I was most shocked at the fact that the company that owned the third largest share of the market was the independent labells. This revealed to me that there is a big following for independent music and artists, and this fits in with what I am creating as my music video will be for an independent artist.
